Okay, so we know metal detectors, microwaves, etc. are not a threat. But what exact;y falls into the "etc" category?

I ask because I want to have laser hair removal done. This is done  not with a laser, but a light (it's called IPL). I've looked through the CYBX manual, called both the spa & CYBX, and googled endlessly but can't find anywhere that says this is a threat.

My epilepsy is not photosensitive. I am mainly worried about the device. THe same "laser" that is used to remove hair also does photo rejuvenation & tattoo removal. It doesn't sound like it will interfere. Has anybody had this done?

Also, does anyone know if there a list of malfunction causes somewhere online? or is that considered private info?

Thanks,
Heidi in HOUston, TX

By the way, the VNS manual is located here: http://www.vnstherapy.com/epilepsy/hcp/manuals/default.aspx

And the warnings for my specific model, 102r, is located here: http://www.vnstherapy.com/manuals/doc_download.asp?docid={039437FB-B231-4356-89C2-C9125C5D5B59}

Warnings/Precautions strait from the manual (for those who don't already know what they list):
Quote
Vagotomy—The VNS Therapy System cannot be used in patients
after a bilateral or left cervical vagotomy.

Ok--
after several calls to CYBX and the spa where I plan to have this done, the onstaff doc at the spa gave me a call. Their main concern was what triggers my seizures as the device/procedure is light based.
My main concern was my VNS or nerve injury. My leads are 12 years old... the last thing I want to do is have that part of the surgery again.

Anyway, they gave me the okay and I will let you know how it goes! I might give cyberonics another call if I want to get my underarms done... that might be another beast! Underarms would be the most exciting for me since it's difficult to shave under my left pit anyway.

I just wanted to share. Please wish me luck.

Wink HI Heidi & WELCOME to the board!  Thanks for joining!

Your question was asked by another Member awhile back, and I'm sorry I can't remember where to find that thread, but if I remember correctly, that person didn't have an issues with laser hair removal.

There have been folks who have had issues with airport metal detectors and their VNS, such as their device changed settings, so please do take caution and don't go under them.  Show security your card and ask to be hand searched-it's like taking precaution for a pacemaker, and security guards are supposed to honor the request so long as you provide your VNS card you should have received when implanted.  When I had my VNS in and I flew, I showed my card and was taken around the megatometer, asked to place my hand over the generator site and was hand patted and wanded down, same as when I went thru courthouse or any other security.

How have you done with seizure control and side effects?

Oh and I also wanted to let you know if you click on the "Articles and Links" tab above, you can access the patient and physicians manuals for epilepsy and depression.

Take care!
Cool
