We are about to take our first airplane trip since the scanner implant.  Is anyone aware of issues with airport security.  We know that he will set off the scanner as he walks through.  One of the other sites said that the scanners and wands can turn off the vns.  Has anyone else heard of this?

:D HI dcortright!

When I took a flight when I had my VNS, I presented my VNS card to airport security.  At that point, they treated my VNS like they would a cardiac pacemaker and escorted me around the megatometer.  They frisked me (for lack of better words), and used the hand held wand to check me.  They also had me hold my hand over the generator site while they used the wand.

I know of a member here on this site who had problems with her VNS setting being changed when she went under the megatometer.

Also, one side effect I learned about VNS is blood clots.  You may want to consider talking to the doctor about getting the special hose (I call them flight socks) to have him wear.  They help prevent blood clots.  I bought mine at a pharmacy that sells medical equipment, and the price was around $20 for the type that are thigh high.  They also sell the type that go up to the knee-those are cheaper.  If it is going to be a long flight and he isn't going to be walking much, I would wear the thigh high ones.  They are washable and can be used until they wear out.

Take great care and enjoy your flight!

My VNS was turned off when I walked through airport security. Now they treat me like I have a pacemaker and I've had no more problems.

Event Date 01/01/2005
Event Type  Malfunction
Manufacturer Narrative

H. 6. Vns therapy system labeling states that properly operating microwave ovens, electrical ignition system. Power transmission lines, theft-prevention devices, and metal detectors are not expected to affect the pulse generator. H. 6. Vns therapy system labeling states that pts should exercise reasonable caution in avoiding devices that generated a strong electric or magnetic field. If a pulse generator ceases operation while in the presence of electromagnetic interference (emi), moving away from the source may allow it to return to its normal mode of operation.

Event Description

Vns pt has been going to court frequently and that when the courthouse security scan their body with the metal-detecting wand, they collapses in severe pain. There is no loss of consciousness, but the pt does experience a seizure afterwards. Treating neurologist indicated that the pt's condition is stable. Review of manufacturing records for both the pulse generator and the bipolar lead revealed no anomalies that would adversely affect device performance. Investigatio to date has been unable to determine whether the vns therapy system is properly functioning or why the use of the metal-detecting wand on this vns pt has resulted in the reported response.

Here is an alert I found for pace-makers but will also affect vns generators and other implanted devices.   http://cdn.intechopen.com/pdfs/13783/InTech-Electromagnetic_interference_of_the_pacemakers.pdf
